Tiresome and weird

The peerless Christiane Amanpour - who so recently brought us God's Warriors, in which it was definitively proven that all Abrahamic religions are basically the same and that a moral equivalency exists between their practicioners - is next tackling the rather more substantial issue of the mounting problems in Russia. And rightly so! Vladimir Putin is monstrous, and the things he is doing should be more broadly known.

However, the rhetoric involved in her approach is... well, see for yourself:

Yes, naturally, "Czar" Putin. Obviously. It wouldn't do to refer to, say, the brutal regime that very recently ground Russia under its heel, then. You know, the regime of which Mr. Putin was an active and enthusiastic part. No, that would be wholly inappropriate at this time! He's more like the Tsar (not "Czar") than a soviet communist and KGB agent, even though he is not actually a tsarist and is actually a soviet communist and KGB agent.

Oh well. I guess I can take comfort from living in a world so fixed that no matter how many millions of people communists kill, kings can still be held up as the ultimate examples of evil. At least you know where you stand.

In fairness, "Stalin Putin," "Communist Putin," "Soviet Putin," and even "In Soviet Russia, Putin Control You" don't have the same ring.

I guess I'd like them to be looking for something more accurate than "a nice ring to it."

But I am notorious for asking too much from the news media.
